5 Decadent Bakeries to Visit Near Ottawa & Gatineau in the Outaouais

Like many regions of Quebec, the Outaouais is blessed to have such a great and developing gastronomical scene. No matter what time of the year it is, it always feels good to step into an amazing bakery. Bakeries are not only source of comfort with their warmth and charm, but they are also locations where pastry chefs are let loose with their creative minds to come up with what can sometimes only be described as ‘our dreams on a plate’. Fortunately for us, there are so many great bakeries throughout the Outaouais region. From small regional shops to luxury boutiques. In this post, I present 5 amazing bakeries to visit near Ottawa & Gatineau which are located in the magnificent Outaouais region of Quebec.

1. Maison Oddo

Opened in 2019, Maison Oddo is owned and operated by Benjamin Oddo, named the number 1 pastry chef in the entire province of Quebec in 2020. After receiving such a major acclamation, Maison Oddo as quickly made a name for itself in the region and throughout Quebec. Here, you can purchase freshly baked goods and delicious pastries, as well as coffees, salads, sandwiches, pizzas, and other meals. While some of the items are a bit pricy, they are really delicious. To give an idea on pricing, I purchased a chocolatine for 3.25$ +tx which was good.

Location: 260 Boul. Saint-Raymond, Gatineau, QC J9A 3G7

2. Boulangerie Aux deux frères

Since 2008, this bakery as become a favourite for many people in the region, including myself. Owned and operated by two brothers, this bakery produces amazingly fresh bake goods, breads, and pizzas every morning. They also retail many local and regional products in their shop. Beware, some of the products fly off the shelves quickly in the morning and for good reason. Not only are their bake goods delicious, but they are reasonably priced too. I highly recommend trying out their chocolatines and their brownies.

3. Pipolinka Bakery

Baked with mostly local produce, Pipolinka offers not only high-quality sourdough bread (and other types of bread), but also delicious pastries and savory items. Everything is hand made. All their milk, eggs, cheese and honey are all from within a 100 km radius. They also offer great local products like cheese and meats. You can also purchase great coffee and delicious smoothies. This is one of my personal go-to stops when visiting Wakefield. This also makes for a fantastic option for lunch with good fresh soups. I recommend you try their ‘chèvretine’ which looks like a chocolatine but is filled with goat cheese. So good!

4. Pontiac Home Bakery

First established in 1951, the Pontiac Home Bakery has been serving locals as well as visitors for more than half a century. To have been in business for that long the product must be good, right? Absolutely! Not only can get some delicious bake goods, like donuts, cookies, cakes, and brownies, but you also purchase some homemade breads and homemade lunches. I recommend you taste their donuts, especially the cinnamon donuts. So before heading off on an adventure in the Pontiac, why not stop here and gather a great little lunch to go!

5. Wakefield Bakery

Part of the Wakefield landscape for over 20 years, the Wakefield Bakery has that old charm quality to it. Nothing fancy about this place. But that is what’s so amazing about it. As you walk in, you are greeted with trays and racks of delicious bake goods. From bread to cookies and brownies, they have such a vast selection here. You can easily satisfy your appetite here without busting the bank. I personally love their chocolate chip cookies.

  1. Brandon, the Chelsea Bakery is also awesome, especially after a hike, bike or swim on Lac Meech.
